Sweetbay CEO Broader to Leave

Chief Executive Officer Shelley Broader is leaving Sweetbay Supermarkets effective June 15 to accept a position in retailing outside of the supermarket industry, the Delhaize-owned chain said last week. Broader, who joined Sweetbay's sister banner, Hannaford Bros., Scarborough, Maine, in 1991, had spearheaded the conversion of Delhaize's Kash n' Karry

TAMPA, Fla. — Chief Executive Officer Shelley Broader is leaving Sweetbay Supermarkets here effective June 15 to accept a position “in retailing outside of the supermarket industry,” the Delhaize-owned chain said last week. Broader, who joined Sweetbay's sister banner, Hannaford Bros., Scarborough, Maine, in 1991, had spearheaded the conversion of Delhaize's Kash n' Karry chain to the Sweetbay format during the last four years. The chain now has 107 locations in Florida. “I consider it an honor to have been chosen to help create this new grocery concept,” said Broader in a prepared statement. Sweetbay said her successor has not yet been identified.

SAVE MART ELEVATES JUNQUEIRO TO COO

MODESTO, Calif. — Save Mart Supermarkets here has promoted Steve Junqueiro, executive vice president, to chief operating officer, reporting to Bob Piccinini, chairman and chief executive officer. In addition, Mike Silveira, senior vice president of human resources and law, is now chief administrative officer, reporting to Junqueiro; and Steve Ackerman, vice president of finance, becomes acting chief financial officer, reporting to Silveira and succeeding Ron Riesenback, senior vice president and CFO, who announced his retirement last week. Junqueiro, a 34-year company veteran, will continue to lead the company's operations, merchandising, marketing, strategic planning and distribution efforts. Silveira will oversee core support areas for the company, including human resources, information technology and finance.

ADAMS NAMED EVP AT TESCO USA

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Tesco's Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market here said last week that Jeff Adams has officially joined the U.S.-based management team as executive vice president of operations, a title he shares with Bryan Pugh. SN reported in March that Adams, who most recently ran Tesco's Lotus banner in Thailand, was slated to join Fresh & Easy, although his role was unclear. Adams will report to Tim Mason, Fresh & Easy's chief executive officer. A spokesman said Adams was added to the team to aid in the chain's expansion, which is expected to resume with a 62nd store in Manhattan Beach in Southern California on July 2.

PIERCE'S TAPS JENKS FOR FINANCE POST

BARABOO, Wis. — Pierce's Supermarket, a family-owned independent that operates five IGAs in southern Wisconsin, has named Brad Jenks the company's new director of finance. He will report to Jeff Maurer, president and general manager. Jenks comes to Pierce's after 14 years as a commercial lender in the local banking industry. He will be responsible for all financial record-keeping and accounting for the company.

ALBERTSONS' GABRIEL NOW VIDEO CEO

DOTHAN, Ala. — Video rental company Movie Gallery here has appointed Albertsons veteran C.J. “Gabe” Gabriel Jr. as its president and chief executive officer. He succeeds Joe Malugen, founder of Movie Gallery. Gabriel most recently was executive vice president of marketing, merchandising and supply chain management at Albertsons.
