Wal-Mart Names Cheesewright, Broader to New Posts

Wal-Mart Stores has named David Cheesewright executive vice president, president and chief executive officer of a new regional management team that will oversee retail operations in Canada, the United Kingdom and Sub-Saharan Africa and business development in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Canada.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Wal-Mart Stores here said Wednesday it has named David Cheesewright executive vice president, president and chief executive officer of a new regional management team that will oversee retail operations in Canada, the United Kingdom and Sub-Saharan Africa and business development in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Canada.

Cheesewright has been president and chief executive officer of Walmart Canada since 2008. He joined the company in 1999, holding a variety of positions with Asda, Walmart's United Kingdom business, before moving to Canada.

Succeeding Cheesewright as president and CEO of Walmart Canada will be Shelley Broader, who was senior vice president, Sam's Clubs, before joining Walmart Canada last December as chief merchandising officer. Broader spent 17 years with Hannaford Bros., Scarborough, Maine, ultimately serving as president and chief operating officer of its Kash n' Karry division and president and CEO when that chain was re-bannered as Sweetbay Supermarkets. She left Sweetbay in mid-2008 to become president and chief operating officer of Michaels Stores, Irving, Texas.

According to Doug McMillon, president and CEO of Walmart International, "Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Canada hold tremendous potential for our company, and David has been a champion for our customer, led innovation and delivered returns."

In another personnel change, Wan Ling Martello is leaving Wal-Mart to become chief financial officer at Nestle S.A., Vevey, Switzerland. At Wal-Mart she was executive vice president of global ecommerce, emerging markets.
