LOS ANGELES — Unified Grocers here said Richard L. Wright has been elected chairman of the board of the member-owned cooperative. Wright, president of Wright's Foodliner, Eugene, Ore., succeeds Lou Amen, who was Unified chairman for 14 of the last 18 years. Amen will remain a Unified director. Wright, who operates seven stores under the Market of Choice banner, joined Unified's board in 1999 and previously was chairman of the audit committee and second vice chairman. Serving with Wright will be Peter J. O'Neal, president of White Salmon Foods, Estacada, Ore., who was re-elected first vice chairman, and Terry A. Halverson, president and chief executive officer, Food Markets Northwest, Seattle, as second vice chairman. All directors were re-elected.

GLEI NAMED SVP AT GIANT-CARLISLE

CARLISLE, Pa. — Giant Food Stores here last week said it had promoted Dan Glei to the newly created post of senior vice president of grocery merchandising. He most recently was vice president of grocery. Glei will report to Casper Meijer, executive vice president of format and merchandising. Giant said Glei, who joined the company in 2006 as vice president of grocery strategy, previously held positions in the CPG, grocery and wholesaling industries.

MACKENZIE TO LEAVE SAFEWAY'S BOARD

PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway here said last week in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that Douglas J. Mackenzie has informed the company he will not stand for re-election to Safeway's board of directors at this year's annual meeting. His term will end effective May 13. However, he will continue to serve as a director of Blackhawk Network Holdings, the Safeway subsidiary that runs its third-party gift-card display program.
