Big Y Foods will ban smoking by employees within 50 yards of the company’s buildings, effective July 1.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Big Y Foods here will ban smoking by employees within 50 yards of the company’s buildings, effective July 1. The effort is part of an initiative to improve the health of the chain’s workforce, according to reports. Workers will be offered discounts on nicotine patches and other assistance to help them quit smoking, the reports said. Officials at the chain, which operates 56 stores in New England, were not available for comment.
