Transforming a brownfield site into a world-class headquarters takes planning and commitment. The Golub Corp. also saw the challenge as an opportunity to step firmly into a new era of sustainability and technology. The $33 million building, occupied this year, is designed for comfort and productivity.
“It's all about energy efficiency and operational efficiencies, reduction of labor, and we've incorporated a lot of those advantages here,” said Bill Sweet, vice president of construction and engineering.
Here are some of the eco- (and worker-) friendly features:
-
A radiometer on the roof measures sunlight and automatically manipulates window shades and the flow of air to floor-based diffusers.
-
Three natural gas-powered turbines produce roughly 25% of the building's energy, with byproduct heat used to heat the building in winter.
-
Prefabricated office spaces can be dismantled and moved without demolishing walls.
-
An 8,300-square-foot fitness center includes wood-paneled locker rooms and a separate yoga room with mood lighting (LED, of course).
-
A reduction in common office devices such as copiers, coffee machines and microwaves.
