BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Sam's Club is the latest retailer to bring a subscription-based wellness plan to shoppers.

Last week the wholesale club announced it's offering U.S. Preventive Medicine's “Prevention Plan,” for $99 per annual membership.

Unlike the consumer-focused “Savings for Health” service available at Tops Markets and the “Live Healthy America” program promoted by Hy-Vee, the Prevention Plan is geared toward uninsured small business owners, their families and employees.

“Our member insights indicate that they're looking for solutions to help maintain control of their health,” said Sam's spokeswoman Christie Gallagher.

Subscribers complete an online health assessment and at-home blood test to identify their health issues. Their responses, along with lab results, are used to customize a plan for fitness, nutrition and overall well-being. Health coaching, challenges and prizes keep members active in the online program. A proactivity score helps members track thier progress.

“The more active you are in taking care of your health, the higher your score,” said Christopher Fey, chairman and CEO of U.S. Preventive Medicine, Dallas.

In the future, results from free health screenings offered by Sam's Club may be used to inform an individual's plan. A series of blood pressure checkups, bone density scans, body mass index assessments, and other screenings kicks off this month.
