San Antonio Wins H-E-B Community Challenge

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio beat out 320 Texas communities to win the inaugural Healthy at H-E-B Community Challenge — one of several actions to make Texas the healthiest state. Brownsville and Pflugerville, Texas, took top honors in the mid-size and small community categories, respectively.

H-E-B was already changing the health habits of store employees and shoppers with “Healthy at H-E-B,” a program launched earlier this year to provide tips on eating right, exercising and smart shopping. But to make an even bigger impact it rallied members of the community at large.

From Sept. 1 through Oct. 31, nearly 13,000 individuals, along with schools, businesses and community leaders earned points for their communities by logging healthy actions on www.HEBcommunitychallenge.com.

San Antonio mayor Julian Castro earned 500 points for the city by uploading a video to the contest website, in which he challenged rival mayors to join the competition.
