San Francisco Shoppers Eating Up Organics

NEW YORK — San Francisco is the U.S. City with the highest percentage of organic consumers among its population (35%), followed by Seattle (32%), Portland (27%), Washington (26%), Denver (26%) and San Diego (24%), according to a new Scarborough Research report.

NEW YORK — San Francisco is the U.S. City with the highest percentage of organic consumers among its population (35%), followed by Seattle (32%), Portland (27%), Washington (26%), Denver (26%) and San Diego (24%), according to a new Scarborough Research report. The figures represent the percentage of adults who used organic foods in the past month; 17% of all U.S. adults are organic users. Scarborough measured 79 local markets and identified 23 as markets that have an above-average percentage of organic shoppers. Thirteen of these cities are in the Western census region, six are in the Southern region, three are in the Northeast, and one is in the Midwest (Minneapolis). Nationally, organic consumers spend an average of $127 on their weekly household grocery bill, which is 10% higher than the national norm of $115, according to Scarborough. “The top five markets for organic consumers have youth, higher than average annual household incomes, and a fitness mentality in common,” said Alisa Joseph, vice president of advertiser agency services for Scarborough Research, in a statement. “Cities such as San Francisco and Seattle have long been known for active, healthful lifestyles, and therefore it makes sense that these are the top markets for organics users. However, the industry should keep an eye on the Southern region of the U.S., as many markets there have a significant presence of organics consumers as well.”
