Shop ‘n Save Joins Diabetes Alliance

ST. LOUIS — Shop ‘n Save, a division of Supervalu, is the latest grocery chain to join UnitedHealth Group’s Diabetes Prevention and Control Alliance (DPCA).

Shop ‘n Save is now offering the Diabetes Control Program at 26 in-store pharmacy locations in the metro area here.

The program consists of patient education and support from trained pharmacists by appointment to help people with diabetes better control their condition and reduce the risk of developing complications such as cardiovascular, kidney and eye disease. In addition, pharmacists in these select locations will conduct blood glucose, cholesterol and blood pressure testing services for program participants and provide them with on-the-spot results, enabling patients to get immediate feedback on their status or progress in managing their diabetes.

Others that have joined the DPCA since its launch with partner Walgreens in 2010 include Kroger, Albertsons LLC and Winn-Dixie.

The DPCA marks the first time in the United States that a health plan is paying for evidence-based diabetes prevention and engaging pharmacists to support critical diabetes management programs.

Currently, DPCA services are available at no additional out-of-pocket cost to participants enrolled in employer-provided health insurance plans through UnitedHealthcare and Medica in select markets.
