Sprouts Farmers Market has expanded to the state of Colorado, opening locations in the towns of Westminster and Parker.

With 28 stores already operating in California, Arizona and Texas, Sprouts hopes to add eight more in the Rocky Mountain state by 2010. Industry observers note the goal could be an uphill journey, considering organic food sales are on the decline, and the fact that the state is already home to a number of established natural retailers, including Whole Foods Market, Sunflower Farmers Markets and Vitamin Cottage.

Sprouts' chief executive officer, Doug Sanders, has faith in the state's abundance of wellness consumers, however.

“I'm thinking that this might be our best market yet,” he told the Rocky Mountain News.
