Even dietitians working for brick-and-mortar supermarket retailers conduct much of their work through their company's website. So it's no stretch for an Internet grocer to take advantage of the technology in the same way.

Plumgood Food, a Nashville, Tenn.-based online grocer, has hired Lauren Petr, a registered dietitian who trained at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and has worked with individuals combating obesity and diabetes. In her new role, she'll correspond directly with customers who have specific individual questions, offer nutrition information on the website, develop weekly menu plans that will be posted on the website and help the company's in-house chef create a line of heart-healthy, gluten-free and sugar-conscious prepared meals.

“With Lauren's help, Plumgood Food will soon have an even wider selection of organic and natural foods from which to choose,” said Eric Satz, Plumgood's president. “She'll talk directly with customers to find out what foods they need to meet their dietary restrictions and tastes.”

Petr will also be available to work more intensely with the company's customers on special meal plans, for a fee.

Plumgood Food, founded in 2004, delivers items in central Tennessee and parts of Kentucky.
