May 9, 2007 8:00 AM, By MARK HAMSTRA
CHICAGO — Food Marketing Institute staged the first meeting of a new Sustainability Task Force at the FMI Show here yesterday. The task force, chaired by Bob Garrity, senior vice president of information services at Giant Eagle, Pittsburgh, will seek to “frame the issues” involved in sustainability and help individual retailers develop their own sustainability initiatives, Garrity said at a presentation at the conference. FMI defines sustainability as “business practices that promote the long-term well-being of society, the environment and the bottom line,” said Ted Brown, a former Hannaford Bros. executive who now has his own sustainability consultancy.
