Restaurant Menus Lack Health Options: Study

CHICAGO — Even though chains like Burger King are announcing plans to eliminate trans fats from their quick-service menus, many consumers still don’t think the food-service industry is providing them with enough healthful options. According to Nutritrack, a consumer research study, a fairly low ratio of consumers was truly satisfied with nutritious offerings at 37 leading restaurant chains. The operators that do the best job in satisfying consumer demand included Subway, Olive Garden, Red Lobster and Applebee’s, according to Technomic, the food-service research and consulting firm that administers the Nutritrack program. “Our research clearly indicates that consumer demand for healthy menu options is growing and that most restaurant chains are falling short in truly meeting this demand,” said Bob Goldin, Technomic’s executive vice president. “The data should serve as a wake-up call for the restaurant industry to accelerate its health and nutrition initiatives.”
