PHILADELPHIA — Acme Markets here said it was making progress with union workers on a new contract, averting threat of an immediate strike.

United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1360, West Berlin, N.J., represents about 2,300 workers at 31 Acme locations in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The union had threatened to strike when a contract extension expired Nov. 20.
