ELIZABETH, N.J. — Police here arrested a local man who is accused of using a stolen credit card swipe terminal to put thousands of dollars on gift cards and prepaid credit cards.
According to reports, Juan M. Perez used the machine to issue nearly $80,000 in gift cards using ShopRite's account, and then sold them to customers. The device was stolen in May from a ShopRite in Linden, N.J.
The reports said no customer credit card data was compromised. ShopRite parent company Wakefern Food Corp., Keasbey, N.J., and police were continuing the investigation to determine how Perez obtained a pass code needed to access the account, the reports said.
Wakefern could not be reached for further comment Monday.
