Balducci’s Inks Pact for Dubai Stores

Gourmet grocer Balducci’s yesterday said it has sealed an agreement with a real estate developer in Dubai to open multiple locations in that United Arab Emirates city.

BETHESDA, Md. — Gourmet grocer Balducci’s here yesterday said it has sealed an agreement with a real estate developer in Dubai to open multiple locations in that United Arab Emirates city. The first location will be a small, 1,000-square-foot “grab-and-go” store in the Mall of Dubai, a Balducci’s spokeswoman told SN yesterday. Both the Mall and the Balducci’s store are slated to open “at the end of the summer,” she said. Balducci’s, which operates 12 stores on the East Coast of the U.S., was approached about the idea of expanding overseas by its partner in the venture, Nakheel Retail, a Dubai World company. The offerings that will be included in the first store are yet to be determined, but the food will adhere to Islamic Halal proscriptions for food preparation, and no products containing pork or alcohol will be offered, the spokeswoman said. Terms of the agreement with Nakheel were not disclosed.
