Ben & Jerry's Aims to Source Only Fair Trade Ingredients

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. — Ben & Jerry’s here plans to convert ingredients across its global portfolio to Fair Trade Certified, where available, by 2013 it announced Thursday.

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. — Ben & Jerry’s here plans to convert ingredients across its global portfolio to Fair Trade Certified, where available, by 2013, it announced Thursday.

The effort will involve converting 121 different chunks and swirls, and 11 ingredients including cocoa, banana, vanilla, fruits and nuts. “Fair Trade is about making sure people get their fair share of the pie,” said co-founder Jerry Greenfield, in a statement.

“The whole concept of Fair Trade goes to the heart of our values and sense of right and wrong. Nobody wants to buy something that was made by exploiting somebody else.”

Ben & Jerry's began using Fair Trade Certified ingredients in 2005.
