Big Y to Host Farmers’ Market for Local Foods

Big Y Foods will host a "Native Farmstand” tour this weekend.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Big Y Foods will host a "Native Farmstand” tour this weekend. On Aug. 1 and 2, a farmers’ market will be set up outside the entrance of select stores. The market will feature fruits and vegetables grown in Massachusetts and Connecticut.

“Having been grown locally, these fresh products are delivered daily to your neighborhood Big Y to ensure the finest quality and greatest taste,” Big Y states in promotional materials.

The event will include visits from farmer John Bernie of Meadowbrook Farm, East Longmeadow, Mass., which grows corn and cabbage. The markets will be held at six Big Y stores in Springfield, Longmeadow, Ludlow and Wilbraham, Mass.

Along with helping the Massachusetts and Connecticut economy, locally produced foods are environmentally efficient because they require less food travel, thereby reducing air and water pollution. “Buying locally means helping out globally, and that is important for everyone's future,” Big Y states.
