SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Big Y here said Monday it has launched a customer donation program to support Red Cross disaster relief efforts for tornado victims in Massachusetts.
Through June 19, Big Y customers can donate at the registers at all 61 locations in Massachusetts and Connecticut. Big Y will match the first $50,000 raised by customers. President and Chief Operating Officer Charles L. D'Amour and his wife, Elizabeth, and Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Donald H. D'Amour and his wife, Michele, have also personally donated $10,000 each for a total of $20,000 to this relief effort.
Since the tornadoes struck on June 1, Big Y has also been providing food and water, and in some cases, shelter for the relief efforts throughout the area.
Just five days prior to the disaster in its home market, Big Y had donated $100,000 to the American Red Cross Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Relief fund.
