NEW YORK — The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has cited a Brooklyn supermarket operator for locking its night shift employees in the building.

An OSHA investigation found that employees at the Fine Fare Supermarket were unable to use any of the five exits in the building without permission from the employer in violation of safety rules.

The store’s operator, Mermaid Meat Co., faces proposed fines of more than $62,000, including a $43,000 charge for a “willful violation” for locked exits. The agency also fined the store for obstructed exit routes as well as electrical and tripping hazards.
