Consumers Support FDA Safety Initiatives

WASHINGTON – The majority of consumers believe that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration plays a vital role ensuring that the U.S. food supply is safe, according to poll conducted by Hart Research and American Viewpoint and commissioned by the Pew Charitable Trusts.

WASHINGTON — The majority of consumers believe that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration plays a vital role ensuring that the U.S. food supply is safe, according to poll conducted by Hart Research and American Viewpoint and commissioned by the Pew Charitable Trusts.

Indeed, 66% of those surveyed said they would support more funding for food safety initiatives outlined by the FDA.

A full 74% of respondents also said they would pay 1% to 3% more for food in order to fund those measures included in the Food Safety Modernization Act, and 70% were in favor of food companies paying fees of around $1,000 per year to cover those safety acts.

Of those polled, 85% say the government must ensure food is safe to eat, while 71% say the FDA plays an “essential” role in food safety.
