Court Hears Arguments in Shoppers Case

Federal prosecutors made their opening statements in the trial of two former executives of Shoppers Food Warehouse and the Maryland state senator they are accused of bribing for favors.

BALTIMORE — Federal prosecutors here on Tuesday made their opening statements in the trial of two former executives of Supervalu-owned Shoppers Food Warehouse and the Maryland state senator they are accused of bribing for favors.

According to published reports, prosecutors argued that senator Ulysses S. Currie "sold his office" to Shoppers, which employed him as a consultant and benefitted from Currie's influence in getting public policy and state cooperation in various projects.

Former Shoppers executives William White and Kevin Small are accused of concealing the nature of their relationship with Currie.
