Court Splits Sweetbay, Hannaford Data Breach Cases

A federal appeals court has returned a portion of a class-action suit related to a credit-card data breach against Delhaize Group’s Sweetbay chair to a court, reports said.

TAMPA, Fla. — A federal appeals court has returned a portion of a class-action suit related to a credit-card data breach against Delhaize Group’s Sweetbay chair to a court here, reports said.

The case against Sweetbay had been among 24 cases bundled into a class-action suit in Maine, where the Delhaize-owned Hannaford Bros. chain was also affected by the data breach, which occurred in 2007 and early 2008. About 1.6 million of the 4.2 million credit card numbers swiped belonged to Sweetbay customers, the St. Petersburg Times newspaper reported.

The case was referred back to Florida after attorneys representing Florida victims objected to a focus on Hannaford, which operated Sweetbay’s technology, the report added.
