SALISBURY, N.C. — Delhaize America signed on as a supporter of the National Salt Reduction Initiative last month, said Julie Greene, director of Healthy Living for Hannaford Bros., a Delhaize banner.

“Hannaford is proud to offer affordable choices that support good health under our private brand,” she told SN.

The NSRI is a national effort, spearheaded by the New York City Health Department, to reduce sodium in packaged and restaurant foods by 25%. NSRI has developed specific guidelines for salt reductions across 62 categories of packaged food and 25 categories of restaurant food.

When a company joins the initiative, it pledges that the overall salt level of its products in a given category will meet the relevant target.

Delhaize joins 21 other food companies that support the program, including Fresh Direct, Starbuck’s and Subway.
