DVDPlay First DVD Kiosk Operator to Offer Blu-ray

CAMPBELL, Calif. — DVDPlay, a DVD rental kiosk operator and developer that has units in many major supermarket chains, said yesterday that it plans to add the Blu-ray Disc format to its standard DVD selection at the beginning of June. It claims to be the first such kiosk operator to do so. Blu-ray Discs will be offered at the same $1.49 rental cost as standard DVD rentals. Among the supermarket chains with DVDPlay are several Safeway banners, including Safeway, Dominick’s, Randall’s, Tom Thumb, Vons, Pavilions and Genuardi’s, as well as Kroger and Albertsons stores. “The focus of this strategic decision is to prepare for the long term success and sustainability of the kiosk and ultimately give consumers what they want,” said Chuck Berger, chairman and chief executive officer of DVDPlay.
