SCARBOROUGH, Maine — Empty food cans come at a price — $2.99 — at Hannaford Bros. But it's all in the name of charity.

SCARBOROUGH, Maine — Empty food cans come at a price — $2.99 — at Hannaford Bros. But it's all in the name of charity.

In a partnership with the Vermont Foodbank, Hannaford is the exclusive supermarket in the "Cans of Nothing" campaign. Each can has slots for money collections.

Each empty can represents one of the thousands of empty dinner plates in Vermont. The purchase of each can provide about 18 meals for Vermont residents in need because, along with the purchase price, buyers are encouraged to fill their can with change and return it to any Vermont Hannaford.

The cans are part of the Foodbank's "Nothing Can End Hunger" campaign, an initiative that highlights the pervasiveness of hunger in Vermont. The cans will be on sale at all Hannaford stores in Vermont through Sept. 30.
