CONYERS, Ga. — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, has granted refrigeration manufacturer Hill Phoenix here approval to use carbon dioxide as a replacement for HCFC refrigerants like R-22 in retail refrigeration.
The permission came under the EPA’s Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) program, which evaluates alternatives to substances being phased out to protect the ozone layer. The SNAP approval given to Hill Phoenix applies to all other refrigeration manufacturers.
In addition to replacing R-22, carbon dioxide can be used to replace HFC refrigerants like R-507A and r-404A that are contributors to global warming.
