First Lady Speaks at Northgate Gonzalez Site

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — First Lady Michelle Obama spoke here Wednesday — at the future site of a Northgate Gonzalez Market — as part of her effort to bring healthy foods to food deserts in low-income communities.

The store — which is scheduled to open next summer in a Hispanic neighborhood — is being financed by part of a $20 million loan from the California Fresh Works Fund, a public-private partnership designed to bring supermarkets to underserved areas.

Northgate Gonzalez, based in Anaheim, Calif., opreates 34 stores in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties. The loan will help the company open three stores: one that opened last year in the San Diego area; the Inglewood store; and a location in South Los Angeles that is scheduled to open next year.

Obama said the initiative, announced last year as part of the "Let's Move" campaign, is making a dent in the high rate of obesity and weight-related illnesses in inner cities.

A Northgate Gonzalez spokesman said the chain has launched a campaign called "Viva la Salud!" (Long Live Health!), which puts special tags on foods deemed healthy, such as olive oil rather than lard; it also holds in-store cooking classes to raise consumer awareness of healthy alternatives, and it plans to launch a program to help high school students develop healthy school lunch recipes.

What a shame! Even the First Lady team lacks of proper research....this place has turned into an unfair place of work...this was just a publicity stunt to Northgate...thumbs down to the First Lady Team....in some stores employees are treated so bad....to the point of tears, irrespective of gender....employees are treated with disrespect in their labor rights (respect is not only hypocritical words)...they are abused...discriminated against because of their age (the younger the better for the administration), because of their appearance (If you are a woman-gay and look too man-like...they don't even consider hiring you!! This place is full of nepotism....if you are a compadre to the Jefe....then you are OK .....If you are an employee at this place....you are on your own...nobody would look to your rights and well being...there is no programs to keep employees well...that's a lie....
The First Lady should recommend a Union to this place!

I am personally an ex employee of Northgate Gonzalez Markets. I spent 21 years with this family of employees & I can vouch for the family that owns this business. Let us take this up a notch, please. You know some people are born with the responsibility to feed others. Well, the Gonzalez family was born with that gift and that responsibility. I was with them from zero employees ( because they were all family ) to well over 5,000 employees. I gladly gave them my best years, from age 36 to age 57, because they were & have been the best family I have ever known.

While employed there, my dad fell ill, & I stayed home with Dad 24/7 for one year until Dad passed on. This family we call "Northgate" kept me on the payroll and kept paying me the entire year I stayed home with Dad PLUS TWO MORE YEARS. I temporarily lost it after Dad died, & these owners, the Northgate Gonzalez Family, kept my check coming.

I personally remember many instances when they did the same with others.
I have one favorite story of extreme kindness to an employee:
..... It happened at the La Habra Store: an employee's mom fell ill in Mejico, he came to Mr. Gonzalez, in my presence, & he told of his need to go to his mom's side, agreed, next, I don't know how long I'll be, agreed, next, will I have my job when I get back, agreed, next, I don't have any money to travel, agreed, next, Mr. Gonzalez gave him the money necessary to go take care of his family needs.

You know, in feeding many you do face a number of challenges. Yet, generosity, a kind heart, and a desire to do the right thing has never been a problem with this family. And, let me add that there are 13 brothers & sisters in this family, & they are all out there doing wonderful things.

............I don't think I finished my favorite Northgate Employee Story.
That employee came back to his job after being out 3 months. He buried his mom, & came home when ready. That's integrity on both sides, the best ingredient to wonderful Employer/Employee Relationships.

And, that's my opinion, those are my beliefs, my convictions, my values, & I take every opportunity I get to teach the same.

Wow.....Anonymous slammed Northgate for not being Union....but these stories from long time employees seem to tell of a company that is better than a union boss.
