ARLINGTON, Va. — The Food Marketing Institute here yesterday issued a statement congratulating President-elect Barack Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden "on their historic victory" in Tuesday's election. "We look forward to working closely with the White House, the new Administration and Congress on issues of importance to the American people such as ensuring this nation continues to provide the safest food supply in the world, making prescription drugs more affordable and accessible, and reducing run away credit card fees," said Leslie G. Sarasin, president and chief executive officer, FMI. In an interview with SN, Tom Wenning, senior vice president and general counsel, National Grocers Association, also based here, said, "We have always tried to work in a bipartisan fashion with whatever administration is in the White House, and we certainly will reach out and extend our input to the new administration as far as future policy is concerned. Certainly with the larger Democratic majority in control of Congress, it will present a few more challenges on certain issues." He cited labor reform and both corporate and individual tax issues as of particular concern to independent food retailers.
