Food Lion Puts Guiding Stars to the Test

Food Lion is using an Internet game to promote its Guiding Stars food rating system.

SALISBURY, N.C. — Food Lion is using an Internet game to promote its Guiding Stars food rating system.

Located on the Food Lion website, the game lets players guess the Guiding Stars ratings of various foods, including 93% lean ground beef, orange juice, Food Lion chunk light tuna and Emerald Deluxe Mixed Nuts. Players select on a scale of zero to 3 how many stars each item gets. Those who get 10 correct answers get a $1 off coupon for any two canisters of Food Lion snack nuts, including peanuts, almonds and mixed nuts.

Guiding Stars was developed to make it easy for shoppers to quickly identify and choose more nutritious foods. Foods are analyzed and assigned a rating from zero to three stars based on nutritional content. Products with three stars have the most nutritional value. The ratings are featured on shelf tags and on select private-label packaging at Hannaford Bros. and some of its sister banners in the Delhaize Group.

The Guiding Stars game is the latest installment of a series of online games at foodlion.com aimed at encouraging interaction with Food Lion’s private labels as well as national brands.
