MEDFORD, Ore. — Raymond Nidiffer, owner of Ray's Food Place and C&K Markets, a 55-store chain based in Brookings, Ore., remained in fair condition yesterday from apparently self-inflicted knife wounds after his wife, June, was found stabbed to death Sunday night at the senior-living facility where they both lived. Police said they believe Nidiffer killed his wife before stabbing himself, according to reports.
According to a family spokeswoman, "This is a difficult and painful time for the family, and they are very appreciative of the thoughts and prayers from their many friends and associates. They are currently with Raymond while he undergoes medical care at a Medford hospital."
Nidiffer, 79, moved to Brookings, Ore., from Utah in 1957 and bought half-ownership in the supermarket; he bought out his partners about 10 years later and continued to run the operation until 1997, when he retired, leaving the business to his son, Doug Nidiffer.
Funeral arrangements were pending for June Nidiffer, 80, who is survived by her husband, two children, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
