EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market here plans to retrofit medium temperature cases in its 159 stores with LED lighting from Nualight, Charlotte, which announced the project last week.

The rollout will begin at the end of the second quarter or the beginning of the third quarter this year and will take six weeks to complete, according to Bruce Schneider, vice president, Nualight, who is leading its U.S. operations. The retrofits will be done in existing Kysor/Warren cases containing meat, dairy and fish, and will replace existing T5 Fluorescent canopy and undershelf lighting.

“Nualight’s energy-saving lightbars and unrivaled understanding of retail merchandising is already helping our corporation globally to reduce costs and meet its environmental objectives,” said Steve Hagen, who heads Fresh & Easy Procurement, in a statement. “Fresh & Easy is delighted to build on this work and our existing relationship with Kysor/Warren.”

Fresh & Easy will also install the LED lights in new installations of Kysor/Warren equipment, said Schneider. The ROI for the LED lights, based on energy and maintenance savings, ranges between 27 and 38 months, depending on local utility costs, according to Schneider.

Nualight, which has LED installations at Tesco, Fresh & Easy’s parent, and other European chains, has trials in other U.S. chains with Kysor/Warren equipment and is installed in three other manufacturers’ cases at more than 20 other stores, Schneider said.
