LANDOVER, Md. — Giant Food here is getting an early start to Earth Day, April 22, by supporting the Anacostia Watershed Society’s (AWS) annual Earth Day Cleanup and Celebration on April 9.

Dozens of Giant volunteers are expected to join hundreds of community members at 20 cleanup along the Anacostia River to assist in trash pick-up, tree planting and storm drain stenciling.

Several hundred pounds of trash are expected to be picked up this year Giant will distribute 3,000 reusable bags and provide lunch for at the Earth Day Celebration.

During the celebration Giant Food Vice President of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Harriet Hentges will speak.

Last year was the first time Giant associates participated in the event. Since this is an AWS-sponsored event, Giant said it is not promoting it to customers. The retailer said it is committed to improving the environment in the communities it serves, and is happy to be able to help with clean up this year.

“In honor of Earth Day, Giant is excited to once again partner with the Anacostia Watershed Society to clean up our region,” said Jamie Miller, a Giant Food spokesman. “With so many of our stores located within the Anacostia Watershed, we’re committed to helping clean up and preserving the environment of the communities we’re so privileged to serve."
