GMA Lends Support to Michelle Obama's Childhood Obesity Plan

The Grocery Manufacturers Association pledged its support Wednesday to First Lady Michelle Obama’s Childhood Obesity Initiative.

WASHINGTON — The Grocery Manufacturers Association pledged its support Wednesday to First Lady Michelle Obama’s Childhood Obesity Initiative.

“We look forward to working with the First Lady to identify new steps that can be taken by the private sector and by the public sector to promote healthy eating habits, greater access to healthy choices, and more physical activity,” Pam Bailey, president and chief executive officer of GMA, said in a statement.

In a speech before the U.S. Conference of Mayors the First Lady outlined plans to increase the number of schools offering nutritious foods; provide more opportunities for kids to be active; ensure the availability of healthy foods at an affordable price; and arm parents with tools to help them make healthy food choices, according to published reports.

Recently over 40 food and beverage manufacturers, retailers and NGOs pledged their support to a separate initiative. Called The Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation, its goal is to reduce obesity, particularly in children, by 2015.
