Golub to Receive PETA Award

Neil Golub, president and chief executive officer of Price Chopper Supermarkets here, is scheduled to receive a Compassionate Action Award from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals after pulling the chain's sponsorship of a lion-and-tiger show at the Champlain Valley Fair.

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — Neil Golub, president and chief executive officer of Price Chopper Supermarkets here, is scheduled to receive a Compassionate Action Award from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals after pulling the chain's sponsorship of a lion-and-tiger show at the Champlain Valley Fair.

Price Chopper canceled its sponsorship after learning the show would involve a circus-like act, rather than the petting zoo it said it thought it had agreed to sponsor, saying it objected to the use of caged animals for entertainment purposes.

“By refusing to sponsor the show, Price Chopper is sending fair officials and attendees a strong message that big cats shouldn’t be subjected to unnatural environments, noisy crowds and cruel training methods," said Debbie Leahy, a PETA official.
