SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Green Hills Market here launched a “Recession Assistance” promotion this week to provide a 10% discount to shoppers who are receiving unemployment benefits.
A statement on the store’s website notes that the company was launched during the Great Depression, when founder Clifford Hawkins often extended credit to his neighbors.
“In 2009, in what may be the worst recession since the 1930s, it is again time for neighbors to help neighbors,” the site states. Participants must sign up for a Green Hills loyalty card and have proof that they are collecting unemployment insurance from the state.
