PITTSBURGH — Common Cause and other groups said they plan a demonstration Wednesday outside the annual meeting of Target Corp. here to protest the chain's use of shareholder profits for political spending.

The action is part of an effort to urge corporations to refrain from spending treasury money on political causes during the 2012 election cycle.

The action against Target comes a year after the company gave $150,000 to Minnesota Forward, a political group supporting the election of gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer, who opposes same-sex marriage rights — a donation for which the company subsequently apologized.

Besides Common Cause, other groups scheduled to participate in the demonstration include the New York City Employees Retirement System, the United Steel Workers and the Delta Foundation of Pittsburgh.
