Grower to Deliver Traceable Watermelons to Southeast Stores

Leger & Son, a watermelon grower and distributor with farms in Georgia and Florida, will begin delivering watermelons that can be traced at the individual unit level this month to major food retail chains in the Southeast.

CORDELE, Ga. — Leger & Son, a watermelon grower and distributor with farms in Georgia and Florida, will begin delivering watermelons that can be traced at the individual unit level this month to major food retail chains in the Southeast. The grower will be using the HarvestMark solution, from YottaMark, Redwood City, Calif., to provide traceback and produce information to retail produce buyers and consumers. Label Technique Southeast, a YottaMark reseller, will provide the solution, including PLU labels precoded for traceability. Consumers enter a label code at Harvestmark.com to obtain information about a specific watermelon, including variety, where it was harvested, food safety notices and other product information. “The integration of HarvestMark augments our ongoing food safety program and opens new channels of communication with our retail partners and consumers,” said Greg Leger, president, Leger & Son, in a statement. “Providing the ability for each of our watermelons to be traced back to source of origin, as well as deliver instant marketing information to consumers, will be of tremendous value in educating the public on the health benefits of watermelons and continuing to raise awareness of our brands.”
