Hannaford Captain Fields Questions

SCARBOROUGH, Maine — Linda Greenlaw, a swordfishing captain fishing exclusively for Hannaford Bros., a Delhaize America banner, is conversing with Hannaford shoppers right from the deck of her ship.

Greenlaw heads the Hannah Boden, sister ship to the Andrea Gail, the doomed vessel featured in the book and movie "The Perfect Storm." Greenlaw and her crew catch swordfish from the Grand Banks in the North Atlantic.

Hannaford shoppers can ask Greenlaw a question via the retailer’s Facebook page. Questions will be accepted through October 19. Hannaford will then choose a few of the best to send to her at sea. Greenlaw is expected to reply the week of Oct. 24.

Among the questions posted so far: “What do you think is the biggest challenge facing the fishing industry?” and “How can we tell that the swordfish was suitably harvested when we go to buy some sustainably-harvested?”

Greenlaw is featured in Discovery Channel series "Swords: Life on the Line." She is also author of several books, including "All Fisherman are Liars."

Hannaford's work with Greenlaw is part of its partnership with the Gulf of Maine Research Institute to create a plan for carrying only traceable and sustainably harvested seafood in its stores. It plans to have 100% compliance by early 2011.
