WASHINGTON — The Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation is encouraging Americans to eat meals and exercise as a family through a new social media campaign called Together Counts.

The program enforces the 160-member organization’s commitment to reducing obesity, and especially childhood obesity, by 2015.

“The research we’ve looked at shows that when families eat meals together and when they engage in physical activity together, the family and particularly the children in the family develop lifelong eating habits,” Lisa Gable, executive director of the HWCF, told SN.

Participating families can take the Together Counts pledge, track their progress and earn virtual rewards at togethercounts.com or via the Together Counts mobile app. HWCF members Harris Teeter and Hy-Vee are promoting the effort through blogs and on Facebook.
