RICHMOND, Va. — Kroger Co. is investing $81.8 million in a three-year expansion of its Richmond, Va., store base, a report in the Richmond Times-Dispatch newspaper said Friday.

The Cincinnati-based retailer said the three-year investment plan, which began last year, would refurbish or expand 12 stores, add fuel stations and build two new stores, including a 123,000-square-foot outlet at the site of a former shopping mall.

Richmond has seen recent retail activity as the result of Giant-Carlisle’s acquisition of Ukrop’s stores.
