CINCINNATI — Kroger Co. here and the petcare division of St. Louis-based Nestle Purina have awarded $150,000 to 18 pet lover groups around the U.S., including $53,000 to the San Diego Humane Society for creating the best "pet tale" in the third annual "Tales for the Pet Lover's Heart" sponsored by the two companies.

A spokesman for the San Diego Humane Society said the money will be used to enable the group to continue to promote responsible pet care, humane education and community involvement.

The San Diego organization won out over 17 other entrants, each of whom submitted a written story about helping homeless pets, then followed that up with a video to bring their stories to life. Purina and Kroger awarded each entrant $3,000, with four runners-up receiving an additional $11,500.
