DALLAS — Safeway is planning to shutter the last remaining Simon David gourmet food store here and replace it with a Tom Thumb, according to local reports.

The Simon David chain, founded in 1889, was acquired in 1963 by Tom Thumb, which was later acquired by Randalls Food Markets and then Safeway. Most of the former Simon Davids were converted or sold.

The two-story building that currently houses the last remaining Simon David will be leveled, and replaced by a one-story Tom Thumb, according to a report in the Dallas Morning News. The specific timing of the work is still unknown, pending local municipal approvals, the newspaper reported.
