Loblaw Launches Bag Reduction Program

Loblaw Cos. Monday said that it would no longer provide complimentary plastic bags to consumers.

TORONTO — Loblaw Cos. here Monday said that it would no longer provide complimentary plastic bags to consumers.

The retailer said it would charge 5 cents per bag beginning Wednesday as part of an effort to reduce landfill. Loblaw stores that already charge for bags distribute 55% fewer bags, the company said.

Loblaw rival Sobeys announced a similar plan last week.
