Lower Thresholds Seen as Retailers Hone Fuel Promotions

As gas prices fluctuate in early 2009, so have retailers’ fuel incentive programs.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — As gas prices fluctuate in early 2009, so have retailers’ fuel incentive programs.

While Spartan Stores here is running a promotion offering gas for 99 cents a gallon with a $100 grocery store purchase for four days this week at its D&W and Family Fare banners, Ukrop’s Super Markets, Richmond, Va., has cut back its fuel incentive from 10 cents for every $50 spent in the store to 5 cents.

Meanwhile, Bigg’s, an 11-store hypermarket division of Supervalu, Eden Prairie, Minn., in the Cincinnati area, this week launched a fuel incentive program offering 1 cent off per gallon for every $10 spent in the store, or 5 cents with $50 spent, like Ukrop’s new offer. Many other retailers, including Spartan, offer 10 cents off with a $50 purchase.

The Spartan 99-cent-per-gallon promotion started Saturday and runs through today.
