Lucky Debit-Card Tampering Expands

MODESTO, Calif. — Save Mart here said four additional Lucky Supermarkets locations were founded to have tampered credit/debit card readers after first reporting the tampering last month.
In addition, it said about 80 employees and customers reported that their accounts had been compromised or that an attempt had been made to gain unauthorized access to the accounts.

Save Mart first reported on Nov. 23 that the readers at self-checkout lanes at 20 of its stores had been compromised, but it has since expanded that to include additional California locations in Sunnyvale, Novato, Petaluma and San Leandro.

"We strongly recommend our customers who used a self check-out lane in the affected stores contact their financial institution to close existing accounts and seek further advice," the company said in a statement. "We continue to work with local, state, and federal law enforcement to find those responsible."
