GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Thieves used stolen credit card numbers to buy thousands worth of gift cards at Meijer Inc. stores in a scheme associated with Russian gangsters, a published report said this week.
The Grand Rapids Press report detailed how a band of suspects currently in jail in Michigan bought stolen credit card numbers from an Internet-based crime ring in Russia, then encoded cards with the information and used them to buy gift cards. The thieves — who were caught after a routine traffic stop last fall — were thought to target Meijer stores because they had self-checkouts, the report said.
