GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Meijer Inc. here said Tuesday is plans to debut a new banner called Meijer Marketplace with store it is planning to open next month in Melrose Park, Ill.

The 96,000-square-foot store, about half the size of Meijer’s supercenters, will feature a full grocery store, pharmacy and additional departments like electronics, seasonal items, toys, sporting goods and a pet department, with a layout that Meijer said will allow it to be flexible in changing its offerings to suit customer preferences. Melrose Park, in Cook County, has a population of about 23,000, almost half of whom are Mexican-American, according to the 2000 U.S. Census.

Meijer currently has 13 stores in the Chicago market, including two stores of about 100,000 square feet — the first to test the smaller format — in Niles and Orland Park.

"Meijer Marketplace is a dramatic step for us as we work toward bringing everything that's great about Meijer to a more diverse group of customers," said Hank Meijer, co-chairman and chief executive officer of the company, which has 196 supercenters in the Midwest. "The Chicago market continues to be a very important growth area for us, and our new Meijer Marketplace concept will bring yet another unique offering to our Chicago-area customers."
