WASHINGTON — The U.S. Consumer Safety Commission (CPSC) on Tuesday warned consumers that certain recalled products, originally sold at Meijer, Grand Rapids, Mich, were resold after the recall date due to an error.
Eight recalled general merchandise products, ranging from Discovery Kids animated lamps to Sassy Refreshing Rings Infant teethers/rattles, reportedly wound up after the recall date for sale at discount retailers, dollar stores, liquidation firms, flea markets and thrift stores nationwide at various prices.
A CPSC spokesman told SN the matter is being investigated, and that Meijer used a third party to liquidate the products. Such products are normally destroyed or sent back to manufacturers.
Consumers should stop using these recalled products immediately. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product, the CPSC said in a statement.
Meijer could not be reached for clarification.
In unrelated news, Meijer has agreed to restock on March 14 the free local community newspaper City Pulse at the checkouts of eight of its stores, the Lansing, Mich.-based publication reported Wednesday. The local paper will be on a rack along with paid publications for free pickup. As previously reported, Meijer decided to pull distribution of free publications in favor of a clean-store look. City Pulse immediately launched a campaign opposing Meijer’s decision and loss of its stores as a distribution point.
