Mollie Stone’s Stops the Presses for Earth Day

Mollie Stone’s Markets didn’t print its sales circular this week in honor of Earth Day.

MILL VALLEY, Calif. — Mollie Stone’s Markets didn’t print its sales circular this week in honor of Earth Day.

“We at Mollie Stone’s are taking a break from our printed ad for a week to conserve paper and resources and reduce waste,” the retailer writes on its website. “Please join us in living conscientiously by reducing, reusing and recycling.”

The circular was available online at molliestones.com.

In other sustainability news, the retailer is promoting the benefits of composting kitchen scraps and yard waste, and touts its recycling efforts. Mollie Stone’s recycles 18 tons of cardboard each week, 1 ton of plastic each month and 0.75 ton of mixed paper per month.

“What we've done is transform the normal use of a compactor into a compactor for organic matter only,” according to the retailer.

In related news, Yoke’s Fresh Markets, Spokane, Wash., has reduced the printing schedule for its Monthly Savings Guides. Instead of inserting the guide into area newspapers, Yoke’s now makes it available only online at yokesfoods.com, and sends just a few copies to each store. “This saves 145 tons of paper a year from going into landfills,” says Denny York, Yoke’s vice president, in a statement. “And this is just the next step in our efforts to be a part of the green movement.”
